That is very complex.

There are numerous medieval romances telling very different versions of the grail quest, the fisher king, the healing of the maimed king (or in the “Perlesvaus” how he was never healed and how he died), the wasteland, and Lancelot.

Lancelot only appears in late versions of the Grail story. His adulterous love for Guenevere holds him back from achieving the Grail. For one version see http://omacl.org/Graal/ . In this version Lancelot does not even see the Grail. The version most commonly known is that of the Lancelot-Grail Cycle, which is discussed at http://www.timelessmyths.com/arthurian/vulgate.html .

The account by Arthur Waite here (http://books.google.ca/books?id=Tqoo8SxmuZkC&pg=PA31&lpg=PA31&dq=galahad+quest+holy+grail&source=bl&ots=OCLs5dDwqd&sig=j-JgNQ8Y-HjdhoQYWllyb5i_go8&hl=en&ei=7J4ySvvFEYbwMorI5I4K&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=5) is rather old but still quite good and concentrates on this Galahad version of the quest, while also speaking much about other versions.

The grail quest is generally a quest to discover what the grail is, and to heal the grail king, who is often maimed. The grail king is known as the “Fisher King” in some romances. In Chrétien de Troyes’ “Perceval” it is explained that because he is maimed, this king cannot walk or ride, and so the only sport he can indulge in is fishing from a boat. But later romances sometimes explain that he was so called because he caught a miraculous fish which alone fed all his followers. In the Lancelot-Grail version this story is told of Alain, who was an early keeper of the grail, and all his heirs were therefore bore the title “Fisher King”. The maimed king is identical to the Fisher King, or one of the Fisher Kings. There are numerous contradictory account of how he was maimed. Usually he is said to have been maimed by in his thighs (genitals) by a spear or sword. In some versions of the story is kingdom was magically rendered into an unfertile wasteland at the same moment. It is prophecied that a perfect knight will appear who will heal the king, restore the land to fertility, and take over the rule of the grail.

The gail story, like many other Arthurian motifs, was included as part of the Lancelot story. But Lancelot, as the adulterous lover of Queen Guenevere was not likely to be worthy to be this promised knight. Accordingly his son Galahad is introduced to fill the role, being Lancelot’s son by the daughter of King Pelles. King Pelles is here either the son or younger brother of the Maimed King (called Parlan or Pellehen, or Pellam). Perceval, who is the hero in most earlier versions of the tale, is made into a companion of Galahad, and a third knight is added to make up a trio. This third knight is Bohort (Bors), Lancelot’s cousin.
